Art Deco Jewelry

Vintage looking jewelry pieces are becoming an increasing trend, from those looking for something out of the ordinary or are just charmed by the old world elegance. However, within the term “vintage jewelry” there are subdivisions based on time periods: from Edwardian to Early Victorian, and Art Nouveau to Art Deco Jewelry.

Some of the most beautiful and treasured pieces come from the Art Deco era, which typically feature very luxurious designs. This is due to the large influx of money that was made in the war of 1914 that allowed the opportunity to buy the best fashionable materials such as diamonds, platinum, red and yellow gold for use in designing jewelry.

The Art Deco style is viewed as a very famous and popular art movement that lasted from 1920 – 1935. Although it only survived a short period of time, it holds a lasting influence on many of the designs we see today.

Originally, it was introduced as protest against the Art Nouveau style. Art Deco jewelry emphasized a very abstract design with geometric patterns and the most commonly used colors and corresponding gemstones were black (onyx), blue (sapphire), green (emerald), white (diamond), and red (coral). The baguette and emerald-cuts, both of which were developed in the nineteenth century, were highly popular in the 1920’s because it complemented the geometrical lines of the Art Deco style.
